Constraint

Gantri's platform had to be proven rather than explained, and proving it meant a lamp worth owning on its own terms rather than one that demonstrates a printer.

Two requirements came with that. The point of view had to be resolved geometrically rather than applied as decoration. And the object had to be producible efficiently enough that the process never ended up fighting the form, because a lamp that is slow and expensive to print does not prove a manufacturing platform either.

"Simplicity with soul" is the studio's own line, and two primitive forms is the hardest place to prove it. A globe on a pyramid is close to the simplest pair available. What keeps it from reading as a geometry exercise is the only thing left over: what the pair is a picture of.

Decision

The lamp started as an image rather than a geometry: a moon rising over the mountains. That set the two parts: a globe for the moon, a pyramid for the mountain it comes up behind.

Efficiency was the filter the image had to pass. A pyramid is about as printable as a form gets. A globe is not, which is where the project could have run aground. It did not, because this globe never has to close underneath. It ends where it meets the base attachment, which removes the part of a sphere the process struggles with most and keeps the print conservative.

That truncation is the trade the object is built on. A globe closed all the way around throws light in every direction. This one gives that up at the bottom, where the pyramid is, so the glow reads as a moon sitting on a mass rather than floating above one.

Which is the image it started from. The process did not force a compromise on the reference. It produced the version of the reference that could actually be made.
