Constraint

Gantri was moving into a lighting architecture it had not built for. Everything in the range until then sat on something. A hardwired pendant hangs from the ceiling, wires into the building, and gets installed rather than plugged in.

The harder question was the light itself. Pendants are one of the most crowded categories in lighting, and shaping light that floats in midair so it reads as distinct is a different problem than shaping an object that sits on a table.

The brief also named "simplicity with soul," which is the studio's own line. A pendant is a harder place to prove it than a table light, because there is no base and no visible mechanism to carry personality, only a shape and the light coming out of it.

Decision

Where a pendant ends up is the buyer's decision. It can hang low over a table, high in a stairwell, in a row down a hospitality counter, and it is seen from underneath and at eye level rather than from above. So no single elevation could be the one the object was composed for. It had to hold at any height and from every angle.

The mounting was already answered. Gantri had developed its own pendant mounting system and it came as part of the brief, so the internal components were fixed and the work was shaping the outer volume a person lives with around them. That was the smaller half of the project.

The light was the larger half. A pendant hangs near eye level, where a visible source glares in a way a table lamp's never does, so the aperture had to deliver light without showing the source from below. What it delivers is deliberately uneven: a wide angle downward, where the light matters most and where whatever the pendant hangs over actually sits, and a narrow angle upward, enough for a soft minimal glow on the ceiling and no more. The throw goes where the room needs it.
