Constraint
Different fabrics need different cleaning agents. The obvious answer is twenty detergents, each with its own fabric use and its own scent, which is unworkable for a person standing in an aisle and unworkable for the brand making them.
Four pourable powder boosters solved it instead. A person can treat any fabric they own and keep the detergent scent they already love. What remained was the most sustainable version of that format.
Decision
The format was settled before the design started. What was left was how to make that pour work, and how to make it sustainably, in that order.
Dosing came first, because a booster nobody measures correctly is a booster that gets abandoned. Most powder additives ship with a scoop. Removing it was the risk in this design, since a scoop is what people already know, and taking it away means the container itself has to do the measuring.
Two parts carry that. The cap is an oversized cup, deliberately larger than the dose, so there is margin to aim at rather than a target to hit exactly. And the canister's opening is edged rather than left as a plain round mouth, so the powder leaves along a defined line and lands where it is aimed instead of spreading as it falls.
Sustainability sat on top of a format that already worked rather than being the reason for it. The canister and the cap still had to be the most sustainable version of a pourable powder, but only once the pour itself was solved.
Finish
Rigid molded canister with an edged opening, molded dosing cap sized larger than the dose, scent- and benefit-coded graphics.
