Constraint

Gantri's table lighting catalog was coming up short, literally. There was no height in the range, and a catalog of low objects limits where lighting can go in a room.

Taller is not a drawing problem on this platform. Gantri's lighting is 3D printed, and the process sets hard limits on what can be made in one piece, so height had to be earned within those constraints rather than specified.

The brief also asked the work to carry "simplicity with soul." That line is the studio's own, published under its name on Gantri's site before this project began, so carrying it meant giving it a physical form rather than restating it.

Decision

Height was the brief, and height on this platform is a structural question before it is a formal one. A taller lamp is not a shorter lamp scaled up, because the printer sets a usable build height and no single part can exceed it. So the column became its own structural element, printed in sections and joined, rather than a stretched version of something already in the range.

The shape of that column follows directly from the joining. A straight extrusion is the geometry that binds together without the split showing. An organic form carries a much higher risk that the seam reads, even after the parts are combined and painted over, and a visible join on a lamp reads as a fault rather than as a detail. Choosing a column was choosing the shape most likely to survive assembly.

Stability was the other consequence. A tall light wants to tip, so mass went into the base. That sits with how the object is finished: the translucent diffuser stays at the top where the light is, and the column and base, which do the holding up, are opaque and painted.
